Introducing the 2024 New Flash Fiction Prize Winners!
Dear NFFR Community,
Immense thanks from all of us at NFFR to all writers who submitted to this year’s flash fiction contest. The quality was exceptional. Keep at it, writers and artists. The world needs you.
We are pleased to announce this year’s winner, Claudia Monpere, for “After.” Our judge, Nathan Leslie, comments: “‘After’ is timely, ephemeral and haunting—I have read it many times now and it still bears yet one more read.”
In addition, both “The End of Mammals” by Erin Ruble and “Prudence” by Christy Stillwell were selected for honorable mention. Leslie writes of Ruble’s story: “The End of Mammals’ shows that one does not need a protagonist to write a compelling flash. This piece snowballs in unexpected ways.” And, on Stillwell’s story: “‘Prudence’ is a funny and chaotic ride reminiscent of absurdist drama. A needed shock to the system.”
In addition to the winner and two commended stories, issue 35 features works by Sara Cappell Thomason, Molly Fottyn, S.A. Greene, Beth Kanter, Kai-Lilly Karpman, and K. McGuirk.
Congratulations to all!
Finally, we want to express our enormous thanks to Nathan Leslie for being this year’s judge.
We hope you all enjoy these timely and memorable stories.
